Air monitors set up near Santa Susana amid Sandy Fire
Ventura County deploys temporary air quality monitors near the old nuclear test site as the Sandy Fire smolders 20 miles north of Malibu.

Ventura County air pollution experts have set up extra air quality monitoring devices north of Malibu near the Sandy Fire.
That blaze has pretty much laid down, but it is not under control and there is still worry that it could burn into the Santa Susana Field Laboratory. That's where a nuclear reactor had a partial meltdown 67 years ago, and where there is still radioactive material that has yet to be cleaned up.
Also, there is unburned rocket fuel that has the potential to cause nasty air pollution issues if the fire burns through the old engine test stands.
This is 20 miles north of Malibu, upwind from us during the past few days.
Two temporary air monitors have been set up just north of the 101 Freeway. They show that the air quality was in the unhealthy range — index 170 — as late as Wednesday night. As of this morning, the air monitors showed an air quality rating of 62 and 65, still not great.
But the fire has stopped putting up any smoke plumes. The fire is now 40 percent contained at 2,141 acres.
