Becerra and Hilton clash in only California governor's debate Play

The two candidates for governor had their only debate … last night … on CNN.

In the first 20 minutes of the debate, Xavier Becerra answered questions about taxes, artificial intelligence and immigration enforcement by saying Hilton’s positions were aligned with Mr. Trump.

Finally, Hilton had had enough.

“What people want to hear is solutions for their problems, not these unpleasant political attacks that don't help anyone, immigrant or not with the problems that they're facing. 

“The cost-of-living, all of the problems that you have no solution to whatsoever so all you've got is to talk about is federal policies…

“All you ever say is Trump Trump Trump an, and that's nothing but an insult for every California who is desperate for something to change in the state.

“And all your offering is more of the same.” 

Xavier Becerra could not contain his smile.

“Your words: Trump Trump Trump. 

“Because he is your support … you chased his endorsement. 

HILTON:“That’s all you can say on every question”.

BECERRA: “But you just said it too. And your policies say it every day..”

HILTON: “But you have nothing to offer California, just more of the same.”

BECERRA: “So let’s use your words. You said Trump's ICE immigration policies and raids, in your words, were perfect. 

“You said that every farm worker in California should be deported.”

HILTON: “That is simply not true.”

BECERRA: “Those were your words, Steve.”

Political columnists reacted with amusement. 

Gustave Arellano said ‘Hilton debated like someone already preparing to launch a podcast or beg for his old Fox News job back after he gets walloped.’ 

Mark Barabak said Becerra was ‘authoritative, crisp and kept on the offense most of the night.”

And Ana Chabria said: ‘Please, for the love of God, Steve Hilton, button that shirt. This is not a casino.”
