Eight Ben Allen fire-recovery bills clear key committee

The Malibu state senator's package addressing insurance, home hardening and mobile home park protections advanced through Senate Appropriations.

By Hans Laetz

Eight proposed laws aimed at helping Malibu fire victims — and written by Malibu's state Senator Ben Allen — passed through the critical Senate Appropriations Committee yesterday morning.

One proposed law provides policyholders who get their policies cancelled with more time to find new insurance coverage. Another provides low-interest loans for property owners to make home hardening and defensible space upgrades to improve fire resilience.

Mobile home park residents would be protected with three proposed laws from Senator Allen. One is aimed at providing park residents with an opportunity to purchase their community in the event of a potential sale of the park. Another gives fire victims protections against rent price gouging.

That is the result of price gouging by landlords right after the 2025 L.A. area fires.

Eight related bills from one state senator making it out of Senate Appropriations Committee is very unusual. Each of the bills will receive a vote on the Senate floor by the May 29 deadline.
