Hammerhead shark spotted cruising Malibu Pier
Rare sighting off the pier confirms warm-water species are moving north as El Niño pushes tropical waters into Southern California.

The warm Pacific Ocean is — as predicted — bringing some unusual visitors to Malibu.
Channel 5 has gotten ahold of video of a hammerhead shark cruising around Malibu Pier, about 100 yards off the beach. The Aquarium of the Pacific confirms the identification.
Hammerheads are very rarely seen in Southern California. However, they occasionally move into the region during periods of warmer ocean temperatures. The last hammerhead sighting this far up the coast was in 2015.
The current El Niño is shoving warm ocean water north from the tropics — and with that come turista species like hammerheads.
