Heat wave ends Thursday, rain arrives Sunday

Malibu could see three-quarters of an inch of rain Sunday as Hurricane Rachel's remnants merge with a second storm system.

Thursday will be the last day of the long-lasting heat wave. Highs will be a few degrees cooler than Wednesday, but still dangerously high: 88 on the beaches and 98 in the mountains.

Cooler Friday into the weekend, then comes the rain. Maybe 3/4 of an inch in Malibu, as two storm systems mix together.

The first is the remnant of Hurricane Rachel, which will likely fall to Tropical Storm status as heavy rain comes ashore Saturday near Ensenada. Rain will develop over Malibu Sunday afternoon, when there is a 40 percent chance of showers.

Malibu is right on the edge of the zone where the National Weather Service says excessive rain is possible on Sunday.

The exact track for Hurricane Rachel rains will likely become more clear in a day or two as the system turns to the northeast. Deviations in the final track could influence the magnitude of impacts for the area.

If Rachel takes a more northerly track, the combination of the increased wind wave and lower surface pressure would result in higher high tides in Malibu than predicted by normal tide tables. Right now, high tides are already expected to increase to 1 to 1-1/2 feet higher than the lunar high tides over the weekend.
