Homeowners sue to block big Kanan Road development in Agoura Hills

Residents fear a multistory commercial-residential building at Kanan and Agoura roads would clog evacuation routes during fire emergencies.

Lawyers representing homeowners in the mountains north of Malibu are trying to block the construction of a large apartment building and commercial center at the gateway to Kanan Road and the Santa Monica Mountains.

The multistory commercial-residential building is proposed for the corner of Kanan Road at Agoura Road — a site used for years by a Christmas tree lot during the season.

Residents who are worried about cluttering the entrance to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area with stucco and parking lot entrances have sued. They are also worried about already overburdened intersections getting completely frozen with traffic during fire emergencies.

The lawsuit alleges that the city of Agoura Hills failed to consider traffic and other impacts when it approved the project.

There is also a separate lawsuit working its way through courts challenging the Agoura Hills emergency action safety plan.
