Hot, humid weather to continue through Friday Play

Take Wednesday's heat, add humidity, and it will be even hotter in Malibu Thursday.

The National Weather Service says temperatures in coastal areas will actually top out 1 to 3 degrees over Wednesday. Forecasters say that is a fairly common scenario when tropical moisture moves into the area.

Overnight, a hot fog bank moved into part of Malibu. At 3:40 a.m. Thursday, the temperature was 75 at Zuma Beach, and the humidity was 100 percent.

The National Weather Service says dangerously hot and muggy conditions will again dominate the weather Thursday and Friday. A decaying tropical system off Mexico is sending clouds over Southern California — enough to give the region a small chance of an isolated shower, maybe even a thunderstorm.

There's not a lot of energy in the system, and not much rain could fall, but it could fall in areas that normally do not see summertime rainfall, including the beaches. Don't be surprised if you hear a clap of thunder. But it's pretty unlikely.

In the ocean, the lunar cycle is sending very high tides — around 7 feet — at 9:27. Waves are breaking ashore at 4 to 5 feet.

Surf Wednesday was pounding Zuma Beach, sending water over the berm well before high tide. The beaches were causing a tremendous shore break at times, making swimming hazardous. The water temperature at some places is 74 degrees.
