Mako shark bites kayak fisherman twice off Paradise Cove

The fisherman hooked the shark, which bit him, flipped his kayak, and then came back to bite his leg a second time Sunday morning.

A shark trying to free itself from a fishing hook bit a fisherman, overturned the fisherman's kayak, and then bit him a second time. All this excitement happened in the waters three-quarters of a mile off Paradise Cove Sunday morning.

The action was witnessed by another fisherman on a larger boat, who pulled the twice-bitten kayaker out of the water. The shark, last seen swimming away, was identified as a small mako.

An LA County lifeguard swam out to the bigger boat to help with first aid.

Alex Buford told NBC4 the shark was mad: a guy on a fishing kayak hooked a shark, brought it onto the kayak, the shark bit him, he let the shark go, and then the shark came back and knocked him off the boat and attacked him again, biting his leg a second time.

The lifeguard at Paradise Cove says the beach was not shut down. Because the shark had been agitated by the fisherman hooking him, it was not a threat to people swimming nearby.

The fisherman was brought ashore with bites to his legs. Buford told NBC4 he seems like he's going to be okay, with relatively minor injuries, and noted the man was very far offshore.
