The Malibu way of life is returning to normal. Schools are open Monday. All roads are open on the coast and in the fire area. The city council is going to meet on routine matters again Monday night. And there is speculation swirling about how the fire broke out.

As we reported, the flames started at the juvenile detention center in the Santa Monica Mountains, Camp Kilpatrick, just to the west of that. There is no official word yet as the exact cause and ignition report are still under investigation, and probably will be for weeks.

Thursday night the fire lines held. Ground crews and choppers kept the fire from burning across Encinal Canyon Road south into the thick brush and trees in Trancas Canyon. Fire Camp 13, where some of the fire crews live, was protected. A separate northern branch of the fire was spreading to the scattered mansions along Westlake Boulevard. Those structures were protected and the fire was stopped there.

The fire held at 146 acres all weekend. As of Monday morning it's reported to be 74% contained.
