New PCH traffic signals will turn red on speeders

Malibu will be one of the first U.S. cities to use speed-detecting traffic lights, part of a nearly completed signal synchronization project.

By Hans Laetz

The new PCH traffic signal synchronization project is nearly done, but during construction the city added a few items, including a left turn arrow at John Tyler and new speed radars on the traffic lights themselves.

These are not the ones that will be writing tickets. Rather, these are tiny boxes up there that detect the speed of drivers who are approaching, and they will make the traffic light turn red if a speeder is coming at it.

Malibu will be one of the first cities in the country to try to slow down speeding using traffic lights. That may become a subtle but very fundamental change in how traffic moves on PCH.

That item goes before the City Council Monday night.
