Nicolas Cage among Lechuza Beach residents pulling emergency permits

Fourteen emergency coastal development permits have been issued along East Sea Level Drive, where 31 homes remain red-tagged 6 weeks after Tropical Storm Marie's waves hit

Fourteen emergency coastal development permits have been taken out by residents along East Sea Level Drive as they battle to save their houses from ocean wave erosion.

The Los Angeles Times reports that actor Nicolas Cage has taken out four of those 14 permits. Cage's permits cover debris removal, sandbags, concrete work under his house, and drilling a soil sample.

The other ten emergency permits have been taken out by other residents and the homeowners association on East Sea Level Drive at Lechuza Beach.

Six weeks ago, waves from Tropical Storm Marie washed out the dirt and cobble under Nicolas Cage's driveway. His house is left up on stilts above the pounding surf, but his driveway is completely washed away.

The septic tank also washed away, and Sea Level Drive slumped into the hole.

The homeowners association is responsible for repairs because it is not a city street — it's a private driveway.

Six weeks ago the city red-tagged 31 houses at Lechuza Beach because water, gas, and power lines had to be turned off and the road remains impassable by fire trucks or any vehicles.

The original estimate was that the red tags would be in place for five weeks, but four weeks into the project the original contractor was terminated by the HOA, according to the city.

Last week the city was told it may take another 1-2 weeks for the new contractor to come up with new plans to save Sea Level Drive and get the red tags removed.
