Parks meetings scheduled with barely a day's notice Play

The meeting last night was one of two public meetings on the various parks proposals. The city announcement about the meetings went out just over 26 hours before the first one convened.

And the plans were not published on the city's webpage called "Malibu Community Lands dot org." In fact, they are still not there.

But city officials say that really doesn't matter, because the Parks Commission was only asked for advice, and there is a whole lot of public discussion ahead.

Two Malibu city council members promise that this is just the first draft of a first draft, and there will be extensive public outreach. Marianne Riggins and Haylynn Conrad both attended the meeting. They tell KBUU News they want to hear from the public — but quickly.

"My whole goal is to get these things built in a timely manner because our community needs it, now," Riggins said. "I am also tying this to the recovery of this community from the fire. People want to see these things, and I am hoping to get families and to get people with children to move to our community, to rebuild houses and have families here and have an overall experience that they want. I think this benefits our community and it benefits our schools, because the more people that we have here with families moving in, the better it is for our local schools."

The city Public Works Commission will look at the conceptual plans this afternoon at 3:30 at city hall. But the real decision-making will be when the city council takes this up in September.
