Pepperdine alumna Katie Zacharia named White House Press Secretary

The Caruso Law College graduate's bar credentials are unclear — she says she passed one "when I moved to China."

Pepperdine University is celebrating the appointment of a Malibu campus alumna as the official spokesperson for the President of the United States. The Caruso Law College on its LinkedIn page offers congratulations to Pepperdine Caruso Law College alumna Katie Zacharia on her appointment as White House Press Secretary.

Zacharia graduated from both Pepperdine's four-year undergraduate program and the Pepperdine School of Law. She, her husband, and her four children live in Thousand Oaks, but Thursday she's on Air Force One — as Pepperdine puts it, spreading the Pepperdine community's role as a national leader.

Zacharia made her first appearance earlier this week, reading from a prepared statement Tuesday: "Good morning. I am so honored to work for President Trump and the American people as the new White House Press Secretary. I want to thank President Trump for the trust that he has placed in me. I have wanted to work for him for a very long time."

At Pepperdine, she served as president of the College Republicans chapter before graduating as an undergrad in 2007. She then went to Pepperdine Law. She is currently a board member of Pepperdine University's Dean's Council, a seat she's held for eight years.

Is she a lawyer, or did she just play one on TV? She's described herself on television as a lawyer, or allowed Fox News to describe her that way as she appeared on panel discussions. The president has called her an attorney. When asked Tuesday what state bar she is a member of, she twice replied that she passed a bar exam "when I moved to China." China does not allow foreign citizens to take the bar exam, and it's not clear if she speaks Chinese.

The Pepperdine Law College LinkedIn page says: "We are proud to celebrate her achievement and the many ways our alumni carry forward Pepperdine's commitment to lives of purpose, service and leadership."

Zacharia also spoke about her family: "The idea of not spending evenings with my kids is completely unacceptable. So my president — excuse me, my husband, that's a good one — my husband is out here for the week because we have two birthdays in our family and we are very, very protective of celebrating birthdays as a family. So he brought the entire crew out here, bless him, it's a lot. And we will be moving out here." The family has four children, three of them little boys.
