PPIC poll: Becerra leads Hilton by 37 points; strong coastal support
A new Public Policy Institute of California poll shows overwhelming support for the Coastal Commission and offshore wind, and opposition to Newsom's gas car ban.

A new statewide poll is out from the Public Policy Institute of California — a highly regarded and nonpartisan poll — showing Democrat Xavier Becerra with a gigantic lead.
He's beating Republican Steve Hilton in California's governor's race, 61 percent to 24 percent.
The poll concentrated on coastal environmental issues. 82% say the California Coastal Commission has been mostly a good thing for the state. 95% think that plastics and marine debris are a problem, and 93% say declining sea life is a problem.
Nearly three-quarters of Californians are in favor of allowing wind power and wave energy projects off the state's coast. Only one-third of adults in California approve of allowing more oil drilling off the coast.
73% favor taxing corporations based on the amount of carbon emissions they produce. But 66% oppose Governor Newsom's executive order banning the sale of all new gas-powered vehicles by 2035.
The poll was taken by the nonprofit, nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California. The PPIC polls have been proven to be spot-on accurate this year.
