Sandwich Shop Malibu set to open in home kitchen today
The takeout venture on Morning View Drive has an LA County home kitchen permit, but a state law question hangs over whether Malibu has authorized restaurants in residential zones.

Today is the day that a sandwich shop entrepreneur plans to open her window in a fence on Morning View Drive to sell sandwiches in the residential area across the street from Malibu Middle School.
The owners call it the Sandwich Shop Malibu, and they say they have all the permits to operate in the residentially-zoned area.
The planned sandwich shop? Take out only. Locally baked bread. Locally grown veggies.
The young woman running the venture, Sara Jerabek, has taken out an L.A. County permit for a Micro-Enterprise Home Kitchen Operation permit.
State law specifically says no home kitchen permit can be granted unless the city or county involved specifically authorizes restaurants in residential zoning.
LA County's health department is used by the city of Malibu. The county has approved home kitchens. The city has not.
And here is another wrinkle. The state law allows only 30 meals maximum per day. And a cap of only 90 meals per week.
