SCE choppers, drones to inspect power lines in western Malibu
Southern California Edison says the flights over the next few weeks will look for hot spots that could fail and spark wildfires.

Southern California Edison is warning Malibu homeowners in the western part of the city that choppers and drones will be flying around them in the next few weeks.
SCE says it is measuring power flow through cables to look for hot spots — places that may fail and possibly cause wildfires.
The power company is using choppers and drones because they can inspect equipment from difficult angles, including top-down angles. Inspecting electrical equipment on poles and towers up close and from various angles lets their crews identify any damage or potential hazard that may need immediate repair.
The amount of time it takes to conduct inspections varies depending on how much equipment is on each pole or tower. But expect each inspection to last 30 to 60 minutes for each pole.
