SCE admits Malibu customers lost 15,068 minutes of power last year Play

Southern California Edison has quietly released its annual reliability report for the year 2025 … and the statistics for Malibu are just abysmal.

The average Malibu electric customer lost power for more than 15 thousand minutes last year.

Divide it by 60 .. that’s 251 hours of blacked out power supplies over 12 months.  Cheer up.   Power was up for 33 out of every 34 minutes that year. 

And only 61 percent of that is due to intentional power blackouts … what the Edison people call PSPS blackouts.

We call those self protective shutdowns. 

Some comparisons:  The average electric power customer in the United States gets blackouts lasting a median of about 90 minutes total per year.

The new reliability statistics for Southern California Edison are now out… for 2025.

90 minutes may be the mean average in the U-S … but the average SCE customer in Malibu gets 15,068 minutes of no power per year. 

We will say that again.

15,068 minutes of outages during calendar year 2025.

That is an incredible 251 hours … a total of 10 and a half days of no power.

You might think that the frequent self-protective intention power outages are always to blame, right?

Wrong. 

PSPS outages account for only 61 percent of that total week and a half of ice cream melting.

The rest of the outages are caused by equipment failure … or “other”.

Other means SCE doesn’t know. 

Your misery may vary.

The Cuthbert Circuit … at Point Dume and paradise Cove .. it was out 12,915 minutes in ’25.

The Galahad Circuit … above Zuma Beach … was out 12,491 minutes.

The Maguire Circuit … Trancas to the west … out 13,246 minutes. 

The Merlin Circuit …below Pepperdine … was out  13.148 minutes.

Most of those minutes racked up during the January windstorm and fire.

But certainly not all of it. 

About a tenth of the power outages were in the last three quarters of the year.  

The fire was in early January. 

Again … the median average power customer in the United States sees 90 minutes of blackouts. 

SCE’s service record in Malibu … 15,068 minutes of blackouts.

More than 90 times the national average.
