Sergey Brin pours $102 million into fighting California wealth tax Play

Part-time Malibu resident Sergey Brin has donated a total so far of $102 million to fight California's proposed wealth tax on billionaires — like part-time Malibu resident Sergey Brin.

Data from the California Secretary of State show that the Google co-founder is funding a front group called Building a Better California. That group is fighting the Billionaire Tax — Proposition 40.

That is also the group behind competing measures, Proposition 41 and Proposition 42, that would override Proposition 40. Sergey Brin is apparently hoping that the confusion over the three initiatives will defeat the Billionaires Tax.

Last week, Brin made another donation — $20 million — bringing his total to $102 million.

The LA Times reports that this highlights how California's ultra-wealthy are battling a proposal to tax their net worth, with the money going towards offsetting Trump administration cuts to health care.

No comment from Brin. No comment from his group.

But the union sponsoring the tax the ultrarich Proposition 40 says "California billionaire Sergey Brin would rather spend $100 million to fund a shady opposition campaign than simply pay his fair share in taxes so millions of Californians don't lose their healthcare."
