Silverstein endorses Danny Smith, urges single vote vote for council

Councilmember Bruce Silverstein told voters to cast only one vote — for Smith — in a move aimed at unseating Marianne Riggins or Doug Stewart.

Many Malibu residents were filling out their ballots this weekend when Malibu City Council member Bruce Silverstein endorsed a city council candidate in an effort to unseat one of his two political enemies already on the council.

Silverstein on social media urged voters to vote for Danny Smith and vote for Smith only, not any other candidate. Each voter has two votes and four candidates frm which to choose.

Silverstein said "anyone who wants a chance at some positive change should vote for Danny and withhold their second vote, which improves Danny's chances of election."

Silverstein noted that he and Steve Uhring are termed out — they have to leave office in two years — and he said that a vote for Smith "would assure some semblance of continuity" of what Uhring and Silverstein) stand for, "extending beyond their terms."

The endorsement was clearly aimed at unseating either Marianne Riggins or Doug Stewart, who are running for a second term.

As for Smith, he told KBUU earlier this year that he was not seeking the endorsement of, or to run on a ticket with, any council candidate.

The fourth candidate, Amir Sam Dibaei, has not earned an endorsement from Silverstein.

And this correction: our online news formatting program autocorrected Dibaei's surname incorrectly, and the error was not immediately corrected. We apologize for the error.
