Buena Fire burns 2 acres above Point Mugu Play

Ventura County has had its second small fire of the season, in the western Santa Monica Mountains above Point Mugu.

Hose lines stretched Tuesday morning around the two acres that burned Monday night. No cause has been reported yet for the fire, called the Buena Fire.

It was reported at about 9:30 p.m. and it burned for about two hours.

The fire broke out off Yerba Buena Road, about 7 miles due north of Leo Carrillo Beach and about 7 miles due south of the southern edge of Newbury Park. The exact location was near Yerba Buena Road at Mipolomol Road.

The fire had burned an estimated two acres as of 10 p.m., and officials reported that crews had stopped the fire's forward progress by 10:30 p.m.

The scattered houses in the western Santa Monica Mountains were given an evacuation warning, but no actual order to leave. The warning was lifted at about 11:20 p.m.

The huge night-flying helicopter based at Camarillo Airport did substantial work in putting this one out. The helicopter has been rented by Southern California Edison. It's one of three such first responder choppers based in Camarillo, the San Fernando Valley and Orange County.

Coulson Aviation is part of Southern California's 24/7 Quick Reaction Force. The Boeing CH-47 Chinook helitankers are capable of dropping 3,000 gallons of water.

Last week, a traffic crash caused a similar fire, also in the western Santa Monica Mountains.
