Caltrans holds PCH meeting tonight on Dead Man's Curve stretch Play

Caltrans will hold a public meeting Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Malibu City Hall. It's yet another listening and learning session for Malibu residents and commuters on Pacific Coast Highway.

By our offhand count, this will be public meeting number 12, or maybe number 15 — we've lost count.

The Highway Department wants public input on the exact changes necessary on an eight-block-long stretch of PCH between Las Flores Canyon Road and Carbon Canyon Road. This is one of 13 segments that the state plans to repave and redesign over the next year.

This piecemeal approach is kind of new. The past dozen meetings have been on giant hunks of highway — split in half into 13-mile sections. This one is only for 0.8 miles of highway, and it includes the infamous Dead Man's Curve.

That's the S-curve on PCH where four women were standing in the road when a driver going 104 miles an hour crashed his car into parked cars. The parked cars smashed the victims.

The state wants to talk about safe pedestrian facilities — maybe pedestrian sidewalks and bike lanes along the road in this area. The public session will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Malibu City Hall.
