Caltrans races to shore up PCH at Big Rock Play

Caltrans crews worked Saturday and Sunday on emergency repairs to prevent more of Pacific Coast Highway from washing into the ocean at Big Rock.

Crews are working to prevent waves from hitting the dirt and rocks that support PCH just to the west of the Big Rock traffic signal.

Supports for the road are mostly gone. The wooden and concrete retaining walls built more than 80 years ago were destroyed by the Palisades Fire. Waves have been washing up around the small sections of walls that made it through the fire.

Hurricane waves in late July have aggravated the threat.

Construction crews will be on the highway today, blocking one lane. But this is not the only place where lanes will be closed today.
