Caltrans to close PCH intermittently for four-month repair near Point Mugu Play

As predicted, Caltrans announced Friday morning it will shut down traffic in both directions on PCH between Malibu and Point Mugu to fix the big hole next to the highway caused by ocean waves.

This is a big project. It will block traffic for short times over the next four months.

Boulders will be unloaded from trucks on the inland side of the road. An excavator crane will lift them across the highway and deposit them in the yawning hole next to the road.

That will mean stopping traffic in both directions to allow for safe truck and crane operations.

The work will affect both directions of the highway between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Over Labor Day weekend, huge waves, high ocean levels and peak lunar tides combined to wash away existing rocks. Lanes on PCH have been shifted inland to preserve one open lane in each direction.

A temporary access road has been drilled into the cliff below the highway to allow an excavator to place the boulders.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of January 2027, weather permitting.
