Multiple PCH construction projects overlap along Malibu coast
The $69 million western reconstruction joins long-delayed bridge work and emergency boulder placements from Deer Creek to Mugu Rock.

The $69 million reconstruction of PCH in western Malibu is one of several simultaneous construction projects on the highway. Construction is still going on at the Corral Creek Bridge, which was supposed to be finished a year ago. Construction is also still going on at the Trancas Creek Bridge, which was supposed to be finished three years ago. That project has been delayed by L.A. County Waterworks, which is having some sort of problem installing a replacement water pipe on the side of the new structure.
Further west of Malibu, Caltrans is placing emergency boulders beneath the highway at a cliff that got washed away by the ocean six weeks ago. This was at Deer Creek Road.
And Friday, Caltrans began adding boulders and rocks next to the highway at the giant sand dune near Mugu Rock. This is at the big sand dune at Thornhill Broome Beach. High tides have been washing up into traffic lanes on Highway 1 recently. The traffic lanes have been shifted as far landward as possible. The half of the road next to the rocks is getting drenched during high tide.
