City opens sandbag site above Zuma as winter berms go up

Malibu is distributing sandbags off Morning View Drive while county bulldozers build larger-than-usual winter berms at Zuma Beach.

The city of Malibu has set up a sandbag distribution center above Zuma Beach just off Morning View Drive. To find it, go up Morning View one signal, one block up to Merritt Drive, turn right at Merritt Drive and follow the signs.

County bulldozers built the annual winter berms Wednesday — mounds of sand put up every winter to protect the lifeguard headquarters, public bathrooms and other buildings on the sand.

They appear to be longer than in years past. Portions of the beach at Zuma are noticeably higher and wider than in years past, particularly west of the lifeguard headquarters, where naturally accumulated sand has formed a hill out in front of the newly constructed berms.

But east of Zuma Creek the beach has washed away.

Construction continues on a rock revetment to protect Westward Beach Road from washing out at the Birdview intersection in front of the Sunset Restaurant.
