Emergency rent control for fire victims expires in LA County

Supervisors declined to extend price caps imposed after 12,000 homes were destroyed; price gouging limits on building materials are also over.

Emergency rent control has expired in L.A. County. Fire victims now can be charged whatever the market will support.

Last week, the LA County Board of Supervisors voted against extending the government intervention in the rental market, which was implemented after 12,000 houses were destroyed by fire a year and a half ago.

Limits on price increases for the sale of building materials are also over. Governor Gavin Newsom ordered the extraordinary price hike caps — 10 percent — just after the fires. They have not been extended, either by the governor or by the LA County Board of Supervisors.

Westside County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath said she was extremely deeply disappointed that the majority of her colleagues voted not to renew wildfire price gouging protections for Los Angeles County renters and survivors.
