Malibu City Council to weigh library funding, sports fields, solar

Monday's packed agenda includes $1.8 million for libraries, states of emergency, and Ioki Park plans.

Other major votes on the Malibu City Council agenda Monday: $1.8 million in spending for next year for Malibu library programs across the city.

The council will be renewing all the various states of emergency and possibly declaring a new state of emergency along Malibu Creek. They'll be talking about installing solar power and batteries at City Hall, to be paid for by the city's electric provider, the Clean Power Alliance.

They'll be approving design, probably, of two permanent multi-purpose sports fields and parking lots at the Chili Cook-off site, formerly called the Ioki property. Construction of those soccer fields would cost around $4 million. The city doesn't have that yet, but they think they'll be able to find it. And they'll discuss whether it's smart to put in a swimming pool or not at the Ioki Park site. City staff says they urgently need that land to park city vehicles and to store illegally impounded parked cars from eastern Malibu.

A proposal from the Malibu Pacific Palisades Chamber of Commerce for a visitor center at the corner of Webb Way at PCH is on the agenda Monday. Also, talks with the Malibu Film Society over their ambitious plans to raise private money to build a movie theater and arts center behind the Cross Creek Ranch Shopping Center.

It's a huge agenda. The meeting starts Monday at 5:30 p.m.
