Malibu may ban red-flag parking in one-way-in neighborhoods
Public safety staff recommend parking restrictions, reflective markers and evacuation drills for subdivisions with only one road in and out.

Malibu public safety officials are recommending new parking laws to prohibit on-street parking during red flag warnings in some Malibu neighborhoods. The city should also install reflective markers to indicate road edges or other areas of danger that might not be evident during periods of low visibility.
This comes after a new state law requires cities to identify large subdivisions that have only one way in and out — and then come up with ways to improve fire safety in them. Neighborhoods with 70 or more houses and only one way in and out are affected.
These include Big Rock, Rambla Orienta, Carbon Canyon, Corral Canyon, Latigo Shore and the two Winding Ways. Also affected: the Trancas Canyon section of Malibu West, and Upper Trancas Canyon.
In those areas, city staff are recommending that a fire exit or second road access be constructed, if possible. The city also proposes that reflective address signs for structures and roads be installed, and that evacuation route street signs be put up.
Parking should be limited in choke points during red flag warnings. The city should also conduct community-wide evacuation drills.
This is all according to a report from Public Safety Director Susan Duenas. The recommendations go to the Malibu Public Safety Commission, which will discuss them next Wednesday at 5 p.m.
