Public safety commission to weigh Zone Zero plant ban
Director Susan Duenas is asking the commission to consider banning all plants within 5 feet of inhabited structures, even after the state walked back its version.

The city's public safety commission meets tonight at 5 p.m. at city hall.
They will consider recommendations about banning all plants within 5 feet of any inhabited structure in Malibu. That's the controversial Zone Zero original recommendation.
The state has already walked back significantly their plan for Zone Zero — a plan that was met with fierce opposition across California.
Public Safety Director Susan Duenas is asking the commission to take a look at requiring the strict vegetation cut-back rules anyway, because Malibu is such a severe fire hazard area.
Duenas is also asking the public safety commission to consider tightening the city's public nuisance rules — to force people to trim excessive wood or brush causing hazards to their neighbors.
The public safety commission needs to consider these issues today at 5 p.m. at City Hall.
