Catching up on news from last week, the Malibu High School and Malibu Middle School construction project is entering a new phase of construction. Groundbreaking was held last week for the new Malibu Middle School hub.
District Operations Director Carey Upton says it's always important to celebrate these moments, and this groundbreaking marks Phase 2 of the project, which is completing the middle school hub building and the new middle school gymnasium.
Upton says construction of the new swimming pool will start this winter. Phase 3a, the pool, is about ready to go before the Planning Commission. It's in DSA, the Department of State Architects, and construction should begin in either December or January. The swimming pool is expected to be finished by 2028.
Then comes Phase 3b. Architects are being selected now. Phase 3b will dress up the new high school gym, and when the old gymnasium is torn down, a new weight room support building will be added. That phase will include replacements for the locker rooms.
Phase 4, the last big phase, is the Performing Arts Center. A group of the Facility District Advisory Committee, staff, and faculty is currently a research study group discussing what that building wants to be. They'll look at examples and come up with specifications by about January, and then design can start.
