Navy war games to bring noise off Malibu coast Play

The U.S. Navy plans war games off the coast this week. Naval Base Ventura County warns it will be making a lot of noise off the coast of Malibu.

Jets and helicopters will be taking off from the airfield near Point Mugu starting Wednesday. Aircraft from various service branches — including the Army and the Marines — surface vessels and unmanned systems will be participating. They'll stage and launch from Point Mugu.

That airfield up the coast is the biggest center operated by the Navy to test its robot aircraft, and at Port Hueneme they test their ships.

The Navy advises that aircraft participating in the event this month will be operating largely during regular hours, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., but you can expect some nighttime operations as well.

Earlier this summer, Malibu residents reported hearing offshore concussions of some sort. Many people called us to say they were feeling earthquakes, but the seismographs didn't register any earthquakes. It sounded like offshore test firing at the test-fire range south of Malibu.
