Palisades reservoir still empty two years after fire

A water main break on Sunset Boulevard has delayed DWP's plan to refill the Santa Ynez Reservoir this week.

The big reservoir in the Pacific Palisades section of the city of Los Angeles has not been refilled. After two years, it's still empty.

The DWP has run a plastic six-mile-long hose across the mountains from Encino over to Palisades Highlands to supply water while the big Santa Ynez Reservoir remains offline for repairs. It was supposed to be refilled this week, but DWP had a water main break on Sunset Boulevard which has delayed things.

DWP officials have stressed repeatedly that the dry reservoir in Pacific Palisades does not affect the amount of water available out of the hydrants for firefighting. They say local water pipes were not designed with enough capacity to put out multiple house fires at the same time, and they don't need local storage to put out fires adequately.
