Record-breaking swimmer passing Malibu on Oregon-to-Baja journey

Catherine Breed is near Point Dume on a swim she says will make her the first person to swim the length of California.

A woman named Catherine Breed is swimming past Malibu this morning on a record-breaking swim from Oregon to Baja California. In about 10 days she will hold her 10th world record, as the first person to swim the length of California.

A 51-foot sailboat is traveling alongside her with a support team of three people on board. They hop out of a dinghy every half hour or so to give her a high-energy snack.

Breed says her mission is to inspire more people to get into the ocean, to inspire more women and girls to go after big audacious goals, and to highlight local ocean conservation issues.

"This is the longest expedition I have ever done in my entire life, and I'm just really proud of how it's going," Breed said. "It's amazing to think we have less than 200 miles to go.

"It felt so intimidating how small our little swim line was on the California coast and how much more we had to do. And now I'm planning the finish line."

Breed says she has strict rules while swimming — she's not allowed to touch the boat, and GPS satellite readings mark the point where she gets out of the water each day to resume her swim the next morning.

This Friday morning, Breed and her team were near Point Dume, a few miles offshore. She intends to bypass Santa Monica and swim directly towards Catalina Island and eventually Tijuana.
