Santa Monica Pier beaches ranked dirtiest in California
Despite $100 million in city upgrades, only a Tijuana beach scored worse on Heal the Bay's annual report card.

In news from down the coast, the beaches near the Santa Monica Pier remain the most polluted beach in and near California, according to Heal the Bay's Annual Beach Report Card.
This is despite more than $100 million spent by the City on infrastructure improvements over the past decade. Only a beach in Tijuana, near an overloaded sewage plant, is dirtier.
At the Santa Monica Pier, the bacteria level in the water is high due to a combination of factors, says Heal the Bay. Large crowds. Bird poop. Fish guts dumped over the pier railing by fishers. And the way that currents are trapped by the pier and an old submerged rock jetty.
Santa Monica has built a giant underground stormwater treatment center under the beach parking lot. They have also put bird deterrent netting under the pier.
No bueno.
