Santa Monica to install red light traffic cameras
The City Council approved automated enforcement with fines from $100 to $500 as part of a broader traffic safety push.

More automated traffic ticket cameras are coming to the local area. Santa Monica is going to install an automated red light traffic camera system.
The City Council heard from a parade of advocates for greater traffic safety enforced by cameras that detect cars that run red lights. Owners will be sent tickets automatically — $100 for the first violation, up to $500 for subsequent violations. Low-income drivers can apply for a penalty cut.
No locations have been selected yet. The initial deployment will be at two traffic lights. A citywide program may come after that.
The cameras will be operated separately from the police. The records will supposedly be walled off and not available to law enforcement.
In the last four years, Santa Monica had 214 serious-injury or fatality crashes. 21 people were killed, and of those, 20 involved people walking or on bicycles.
