After a year of radio silence, SMMUSD names new chief PR officer

The Santa Monica-Malibu school district has been silent for a year after its last PR hire ghosted the outside world.

By Hans Laetz

Santa Monica-Malibu School District headquarters has been awfully quiet in the last year. The district has virtually stopped communicating with the outside world.

Two summers ago the school district hired a new PR coordinator, and she looked like a good hire, but shortly after being hired, she ghosted the outside world — no press releases about routine school matters, no returned phone calls or emails. She wasn't even talking to other school district officials.

The school district let this person go last summer, and they've appointed Thomas Piland as the new Chief Communications Officer for the Santa Monica-Malibu School District. How do we know this? We got a press release.
