Van plunges off PCH into ocean near Deer Creek Road

The driver and two dogs were rescued Saturday at the same stretch of highway where a construction zone has no K-rail protecting a collapsed section.

It's not clear what happened when a van crashed into the ocean on Pacific Coast Highway two miles west of Neptune's Net on Saturday, but we do know about a major construction project right there, where the ocean has eaten away at the cliff below the highway and a portion of Pacific Coast Highway collapsed into the water.

KBUU News has been reporting that there's been no K-rail placed along the highway there, even though there's an active construction zone with a crane dropping boulders into the ocean seven days a week.

This is on PCH just east of Deer Creek Road. That's the same general location where the CHP says the van went over the side Saturday.

Firefighters and California State Parks lifeguards scrambled down the rocks to rescue the driver, who had managed to climb out with one of the man's two dogs.

Still trapped in the van was a second dog, that lifeguards got out. The two dogs and the injured man were lifted up and taken away for medical attention.

It did not appear they were seriously injured.
