Former LA County sheriff Alex Villanueva has climbed out of the political grave.
The incumbent sheriff, Robert Luna, is way ahead of the challenger with 44 percent of the vote. But in second place, with 24 percent, is the former sheriff, Villanueva.
Villanueva used to be a liberal Democrat but has taken a hard tack to the right.
The LA County sheriff acts, effectively, as the hired police chief of the city of Malibu.
Now that six other candidates have been eliminated in the primary, Luna and Villanueva will again face each other.
In 2022, Luna trounced Villanueva, the sitting sheriff. Luna unseated Villanueva by a 61 to 39 percent margin.
