Voters urged to drop ballots off rather than mail them

The U.S. Postal Service no longer guarantees election-day postmarks; Malibu has two drop-off locations.

By Hans Laetz

California voters are being urged to deliver their ballots directly to polling places rather than trust the U.S. Mail to deliver their votes in time.

State law allows votes with postmarks up to and including election day to be counted. But the United States Postal Service is no longer guaranteeing that ballots that are mailed on election day will get postmarked in time.

Some election officials are telling Californians that it's already getting too late to mail ballots in. They advise taking the ballots to a voting station and handing them in there.

If you insist on using the U.S. Postal Service, you can take your ballot to a post office and ask for it to be postmarked in person in front of you.

Right now there are two voting drop-off locations here in Malibu. One is at the Malibu library. The other is at Malibu City Hall.

People can also obtain new ballots and vote in person at Malibu City Hall today through election day.
