The Zuma Beach Triathlon will return to Malibu on Sept. 19 and 20. Registration is open now.

Participants will swim in the waters of Malibu's famous Zuma Beach, bike the Malibu coastline and run past the cliffs of Point Dume.

The size and scope of the event has drastically scaled back after Michael Epstein of Malibu wrestled away control of the triathlon from a Singapore company that had hoped to create a major television event.

This year's triathlon will benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club of Malibu.

There are three courses, starting with a Kids Triathlon on Saturday, Sept. 19. On Sunday, Sept. 20, the Zuma Distance race includes a ½-mile ocean swim, 16-mile bike ride and 4-mile run. The Olympic Distance offers a more advanced course, with a 1.5K swim, 40K bike ride and a 10K run.

Registration is open now for all three races.
