Broad Beach residents blast Zuma Triathlon traffic plan Play

The Zuma Beach Triathlon was Sunday, and residents of Broad Beach say the traffic situation was worse this year than in past years.

Social media was abuzz with complaints — not about delays, but about confusing lane closure markings on PCH.

Two-way traffic was moved over into the two eastbound lanes of PCH, and the entrances to Broad Beach were sealed off as the main block of runners and bicyclists passed up and down the highway.

One resident said they have been accepting in years past of the road closures. But changes to this year's traffic plan were seriously unsafe. Another resident said there were very poor signages west of Trancas. It was not clear which lanes were for vehicle traffic or competitor traffic.

The triathlon several years ago shifted its race course to put both directions on the ocean side of the highway. That was a requirement since the underpass at Zuma Creek is no longer available as a crossover point. It also meant that Trancas Canyon Road and Guernsey Avenue no longer had to be blocked off for the race, easing major traffic blockades.

There was one medical emergency Sunday at Zuma Beach, but we do not know if it was a competitor.
