Heat wave ends Thursday as weekend rain approaches Malibu
Highs will hit 88 on the beaches and 98 in the mountains before cooling sharply Friday, with Hurricane Rachel's remnants bringing possible heavy rain Sunday.

Thursday will be the last day of this week's heat wave. Highs Thursday will be a few degrees lower than Wednesday but still dangerously hot: 88 on the beaches and 98 in the Santa Monica Mountains. It will be nine to eleven degrees cooler Friday.
Then comes the rain. Sunday there is a 40 percent chance of rain, with chances increasing into the night.
By Monday, Malibu may get three quarters of an inch of rain as two storm systems mix together.
The first is Hurricane Rachel's remnants, likely to fall to tropical storm status as the center comes ashore Saturday south of Tijuana. Rain will develop over Malibu Sunday afternoon.
Malibu is right on the edge of the zone where the National Weather Service says excessive rain is possible on Sunday.
The exact track for the leftovers from Hurricane Rachel will become more clear Thursday, and deviations could impact how much rain gets here.
If Rachel takes a more northerly track, we could get a lot of rain.
The second storm is an approaching low pressure front moving down from Northern California Monday and Tuesday.
How that will intersect with the hurricane remnants is a giant question mark.
