Heavy rock-hauling trucks to hit PCH 18 hours a day Play

Just up the coast from Malibu, there are warnings of 18-hour-per-day heavy truck traffic hauling rocks down the Pacific Coast Highway. Camarillo's city leaders are warning residents to expect heavy truck traffic between a quarry and the Malibu coast — 18 hours a day, six days a week.

The Pacific Rock Mine is a major source of the boulders being used for safety improvements in Malibu. That quarry is near the 101 Freeway at Pleasant Valley Road, and it's temporarily extending its operating hours to provide rocks for emergency repairs near Malibu.

Trucks will be going in and out of the quarry from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day except Sundays, from now until the middle of December. The trucks will use city streets on the south side of Camarillo, then Las Posas Road and Pacific Coast Highway.

It is not clear if these rocks are heading towards Malibu, or to the PCH project neat Point Mugu. That is where trucks will be unloading rocks day and night on PCH west of Malibu.

Flaggers will close the road at times for that operation, as well as when cranes are lifting the rocks across the highway and placing them on the surf. This is just up the coast from Neptune's Net.

Those hurricane waves should be calming down Tuesday afternoon — that's when, by coincidence, the city has scheduled an El Niño workshop. Caltrans officials have promised to show up to answer questions, as well as officials from various city departments of the City of Malibu.
