Hurricane Polo could send surf, rain to Malibu next week Play

Malibu may get some more heavy surf, heavy currents, and maybe even some rain early next week. A new hurricane has just exploded off the coast of Mexico, but it's too early to say exactly how Hurricane Polo will affect us here on the coast.

After several weeks of being relatively quiet, the eastern Pacific Ocean hurricane zone has suddenly roared to life. Hurricane Polo is Category 4 right now, swirling around due south of Acapulco. It's expected to intensify into a Category 5 hurricane Tuesday and to move northwest right up the coast of Mexico, right off the coast of Baja.

A couple of the predictions show it coming ashore on Baja California and tracking over into the Sea of Cortez.

That's sending us here in Malibu big waves by Friday as it begins to peak around the tip of Baja California. Malibu could get some rain next week, possibly as much as what Hurricane Marie gave us two weeks ago, or possibly even worse. We don't know yet.
