The Malibu City Council goes into emergency session Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. to ratify a state of emergency declared by the city manager over the high surf damage. City Manager Joe Irvin last week issued a state of emergency due to the beach erosion.
The city code empowers the city's Director of Emergency Services to proclaim a local emergency when there's a calamity and when the City Council is not in session. Malibu does not have a formal Emergency Services Director right now. The city is hiring a new one to replace Susan Duenas, who just retired. The city manager is filling in. His proclamation of an emergency has to be ratified by the City Council within seven days of its issuance or it'll expire. The meeting is at 12:30 p.m. at City Hall.
At 2 p.m. Tuesday, the City Council was already scheduled to have a special meeting on a zoning appeal about a house proposed for a bluff just west of Broad Beach, west of the La Chusa Beach area.
