A happy and sad day Tuesday at the Santa Monica Pier. Crews will begin removing the pier's iconic sign, which has been there since 1941. It is being sent to Las Vegas for a full restoration and will be gone for a year and a half.
The bridge that connects the pier to Ocean Avenue, right under the sign, is being torn out and replaced. There is a temporary pedestrian bridge around the work. The sign is being removed and shipped to Las Vegas Tuesday.
