Construction to replace deteriorated pilings and bracing is expected to begin within two weeks and finish by the end of January 2027.

California State Parks has signed a $2.1 million contract for a major repair job at the Malibu Pier. The contract was signed and announced Wednesday, work is supposed to be finished in mid-January.

Construction is anticipated to begin within two weeks and should be finished after three months.

Some wooden pilings are missing, others have deteriorated; new ones will be added and bracing will be replaced to strengthen the pier.

The $2.1 million will come from state money passed by the voters in 2024 — Proposition 4, the climate bond.

It's been nearly a year since the state looked at the end of the pier and decided to close it down, after a similar state-owned pier up in Santa Cruz fell into the bay during a big storm.

The governor's state of emergency for El Niño coastal damage has allowed the California State Parks Department to cut through red tape and get emergency permits for the repair quickly.

State Parks says the Malibu repairs should be finished by the end of January 2027.
