Edison power fails again in western Malibu

A second outage hit Trancas early Tuesday, a day after a power surge knocked out 2,270 customers from Point Dume to Ventura County.

Southern California Edison failed again early Tuesday morning in western Malibu.

Power cut off at 1:33 a.m. in the Trancas area. It was restored about 25 minutes later.

It is not known if the power was cut for repairs to the equipment that failed the day before, when a power surge and outage hit the same area at 6:17 in the morning.

2,270 customer accounts lost power, from Point Dume west into Ventura County. Generators fired up and kept the lights on at Malibu High School and Malibu Middle School.

It appears that a voltage spike may have gone down the lines. The outage was not instantaneous but was preceded by apparent voltage spikes and dips.

Yesterday, power was restored to most customers after 2-1/2 hours. But 20 customers were without power until near 10 a.m., nearly four hours after the blackout started.

The best explanation that a Southern California Edison spokeswoman could come up with was that the “cause is under investigation.” While crews were still coming up with an explanation, the power failed a second time early this morning.

Again, we do not know if the two outages were related.
